Born in Mumbai in 1964, Dodiya graduated from Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in 1986. The artist’s persona is often the protagonist in her artworks. Her expressive watercolours are emotionally charged, and loaded with self-awareness and introspection; they offer the viewer access to moments lifted from “the private discourse that goes on within oneself when one is alone”, yet never fully reveal the full narrative. She draws inspiration from a range of artists, including poet Sylvia Plath, filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, and Early Renaissance masters Piero della Francesca and Giotto. Her works are also influenced by the bold patterns and vivid colours of medieval French tapestries and Japanese ukiyo-e prints. She has had solo exhibitions in New York, Singapore, and India.
