Agus Baqul Purnomo’s (b. 1975, Indonesia) large-scale acrylic paintings have been referred to by critics as “abstract impressionism.” His work is recognizable for its use of Indonesian Islamic calligraphy, painted over an abstract background in contrasting hues. The resulting images are simultaneously abstract and literal. In these and other works, the texts Purnomo chooses are personally and culturally significant. In 2009, for example, the artist completed a series of works depicting the doas, or prayers, that are most crucial to the daily lives and rituals for Indonesian Muslims, and which are traditionally learned from one’s parents.
