Bunohan : Tanah Air
2015

Dain Said’s portrayal of the Malay world takes the periphery as the centre stage of his drama. The three channel videos are dedicated character studies of three male siblings who were the chief protagonists and antagonists of his feature film Bunohan: Tanah Air. Each of the screens situates his principal characters within different landscapes that bring their psychological profiles into relief. They are not only figures that are shaped by their environments; their personalities are amplified by the space they operate within. These nuances inform the decisions of each character in the film. Though related by blood, the three-screen projections also suggest that each of them is alienated from one another, each acting upon their own private universe that carries larger moral consequences.
