Tetamu Senja
2008

Unlike the artist’s more typical depictions of Malay houses in watercolour, Tetamu Senja is markedly different in terms of medium and subject matter. Here, he depicts one of the most significant and sacred sites  in the Islamic world -  the Kaaba, which sits at the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca. A sea of devout Muslims gather reverently at the front gates. Behind them, the moving crowd is swept up in a white blur and increasingly fades away, leaving the holy site as the only clear and solid form on the canvas. This is a painting of great spiritual devotion.
