Tan Choon Ghee (b. 1930-2010, Penang, Malaysia) was a prolific watercolourist, focused on capturing the ever-changing street life in Malaysian towns. He met his first mentor - Kuo Ju Ping while living in George Town, and later on trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. Between 1957-1959, he furthered his education at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Arts in London, UK. After a short stint working as television set designer in Singapore and Hong Kong, Tan began his career as an artist and art teacher in 1969. He has held multiple solo exhibitions in his hometown of Penang including: Retrospective Exhibition (1992), Retrospective Exhibition (2000), A Tribute to Tan Choon Ghee (2001), A Lifetime of Drawing (2014) and Tan Choon Ghee: Resonance of the Magical Moments (2017). Tan’s work and private sketches can be found in the collections of his family and the Penang State Art Gallery.
