In his signature compositional styling, Harun Mokhtar plays with space, dividing the canvas into a split-screen view. A humble mosque with its wooden structure and minaret sits on the top segment, with the star and crescent - a symbol of Islamic faith - at the highest point of the painting. The architecture sits on a bright yellow base, strategically painted as a crisp, contrasting divide to the family portrait below - a father with his young sons, waving the Malaysian flag. The painting’s background of deep green and blue hues, the colours of Heaven and Earth, evokes a profound sense of calm and belonging, rooted in faith.

Haron’s practice reflects his appreciation of Malaysia’s built heritage. He meticulously depicts traditional and heritage architecture - places of worship, colonial and post-war buildings - and combines those images with those of the people who occupy those spaces.

About Haron Mokhtar

Haron Mokhtar’s (b. 1963, Sungai Besar, Selangor, Malaysia) artistic focus lies in Malay traditional architecture and culture. He received a BA in Fine Art at the MARA Institute of Technology, majoring in Painting and Printing. He also holds an Art Teaching Diploma which embarked him on his art teaching career at various institutes across Selangor and Sarawak. He has been awarded the Major Award in the Young Contemporaries (1987) and First Prize in ITM Art Competition (1988). His consistent series has culminated in various solo exhibitions such as: Siri Kaseh Sayang, Galeri Shah Alam (1995); In Pursuit of Penang, The Artists Space, Hotel Concorde (1999); Siri Atas Bawah Pusaka, Pelita Hati (2005); Siri Sutera Mengadap Tuanku Sultan, Istana Mestika (2009); Siri Warisan, Pelita Hati (2011); Yesteryear Part I, and Yesteryear Part 2, Interpr8 Art Space (2015) and a retrospective titled Mokhtar: Kapsul Masa 1988-2018, at Galeri Shah Alam (2018).
