There is No Explosive in This

The series No Explosive in This includes works produced across different mediums, including performance art and photography. The series began with a performance in which the artist asked 100 participants to carry bags and suitcases around the streets of London, covered with the words, THERE IS NO EXPLOSIVE IN THIS. In this work which illustrates everyday objects confiscated at airports, she addresses the climate of fear that is a part of life in many parts of the world, due to threats of various kinds. Territorial borders and the unexplained disappearance of people in war are some of the themes that she incorporates into her work.

About Shilpa Gupta

Born in 1976 in Mumbai, Gupta received her BFA in Sculpture from the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Fine Arts, Mumbai, in 1997. Her practice is frequently engaged with new media, including the use of the Internet, touch screens and interactive projections. Gupta is interested in human perception and how information, visible or invisible, gets transmitted and internalized in everyday life. Her work engages with zones where definitions get played out, be it borderlines, labels, and ideas of censorship and security, and often invite audience participation, to encourage wider engagement with the political and philosophical issues that her works explore. She has recently exhibited at both the Venice and Kochi-Muziris Biennales, and her work has been shown at various galleries and institutions across Asia, Europe, Australia, and the United States.
